IT Night for Parents and Educators – November 17, 2011

The ITRI, along with the Information Systems Department, hosted the 4th annual IT Night for Parents and Educators on Thursday, November 17, 2011.  The event was held in the Willard J. Walker Hall Seminar Room with dinner served just before the event began.

The program is designed to enlighten parents and educators of junior high and high school students about the field of Information Technology, the University of Arkansas, and the Information Systems Degree program.  This event is a part of ITRI's mission to promote student interest in the study of Information Technology and facilitate the exchange of information between academic and business community.

This year, several representatives from the University of Arkansas spoke to parents and educators about services offered by the University.  Denise Burford spoke on behalf of the Financial Aid Office to inform attendees on various options available to help students afford college, and Wendy Stouffer offered advice on behalf of the Scholarship Office.  Renee Clay from the Career Development Center spoke about techniques for helping students find jobs during and after college.  A current ISYS student Brittney Dudley spoke at the event as well as an IT industry representative.  Stephen Witty, Senior Technical Manager for FedEx Freight, introduced parents and educators to what FedEx is doing in the field of IT and also spoke about opportunities for jobs in the IT industry.  The ISYS Department Chair, Rajiv Sabherwal, initiated the assembly with a welcoming introduction to announce the speakers and also concluded the meeting with a wrap up.  The ITRI is happy to host this event for the fourth year in a row and hopes to continue to inform parents and educators about the field of Information Technology, the Information Systems Degree program, and the University of Arkansas in general during upcoming IT Nights for Parents and Educators.
